In these works, I manipulate glyphs from the Mayan phonetic alphabet. I like the glyphs' formal affinity with certain cartoon styles: rounded, linear shapes abstracted from nature with squat proportions. As a lay viewer, I cannot discern the narrative or linguistic components of the glyphs, but they are compelling visual symbols that allude to language. In my paintings and drawings, I combine, pile, stack, and blur these glyphs to form nonsensical masses. I am inspired by linguistic permutations of many types, including spam text and translation editing. |
